Teams Chasing a Bowl Breakthrough in 2026
Three FBS programs have never played in a bowl in our 2005-2025 records, and a dozen more are dragging droughts of five years or longer into 2026.
Bowl eligibility is the floor of the sport, six wins and a December trip, and most programs treat it as a birthright. Then there is the other list. We went through our bowl database, all 752 bowl games from the 2005 through 2025 seasons, and counted appearances for every current FBS program. Three schools have zero. A dozen more have not been since 2021 or earlier. For all of them, the 2026 season is not about a playoff seed. It is about ending a sentence.
Framing, stated plainly. "Never" in this post means never in our records, which cover the 2005–2025 seasons, 21 seasons of bowls. Where a claim reaches beyond that window, we say so and source it separately.
The three that have never gone
UMass is the hard case. The Minutemen have never played in an FBS bowl game, full stop, a fact our streak file carries independently of the 21-season window. Every other program in the sport has had its December at some point in the modern era. UMass is still waiting for its first, and every 3-9 season in Amherst restarts the clock.
North Dakota State and Sacramento State are the new cases, and their zero comes with an asterisk of the good kind: both joined the FBS in 2026, so 2026 is the first season either could possibly go. Their chase is not a drought. It is an opening. A bowl trip in year one at the new level would be an announcement, and both fan bases know exactly which December date would do it. The full 2026-27 tie-in table shows where a bid could land.
The long droughts
These programs have gone bowling before. They just have not gone lately. Last bowl appearance, from our records:
| School | Last bowl season | Appearances, 2005–2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Louisiana-Monroe | 2012 | 1 |
| Akron | 2017 | 3 |
| Stanford | 2018 | 10 |
| Charlotte | 2019 | 1 |
| Temple | 2019 | 7 |
| Florida Atlantic | 2020 | 5 |
| Ball State | 2021 | 6 |
| Kent State | 2021 | 3 |
| Michigan State | 2021 | 13 |
| Nevada | 2021 | 14 |
| Tulsa | 2021 | 11 |
| UTEP | 2021 | 4 |
Louisiana-Monroe is the extreme: one bowl appearance in 21 seasons of records, back in 2012, and nothing since. Charlotte's line reads the same way, one trip in 2019 and silence after. Stanford is the strangest entry, a program with 10 appearances in the window that has not been back since 2018; Michigan State (13 appearances), Nevada (14), and Tulsa (11) are the drought's other fallen regulars, all frozen at 2021. Middle Tennessee and Purdue, last seen in the 2022 bowls, are one season behind this group and join it if 2026 goes wrong. Their most recent trips bookend the experience nicely: Middle Tennessee won the 2022 Hawaii Bowl, 25–23 over San Diego State, while Purdue's last December was the 2022 Citrus Bowl, a 63–7 loss to LSU. One of those fan bases remembers its drought starting with a trophy. The other remembers it starting with a mercy rule discussion.
The last trips, for the three longest droughts, show how thin the memory gets. Louisiana-Monroe's only bowl in our records is the 2012 Independence Bowl, a 45–14 loss to Ohio. Charlotte's only trip is the 2019 Bahamas Bowl, a 31–9 loss to Buffalo. Akron's most recent is the 2017 Boca Raton Bowl, a 50–3 loss to Florida Atlantic. These are not programs that keep almost getting there. They are programs for whom one December, years ago, is the entire postseason scrapbook.
Which is why the newest names on the appearance list sting a little. Delaware, Missouri State, and Kennesaw State each recorded the only bowl appearance in our records in 2025, Delaware winning the 68 Ventures Bowl, the other two reaching the Xbox Bowl and the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Three programs managed in one season what the drought schools have not managed in five or more. That contrast, not the six-win math, is what makes 2026 a breakthrough-or-else year for the whole table above.
None of this requires a miracle season to fix. It requires six wins, or five wins and a good APR when the bid math breaks right, and a December afternoon in a bowl most fans could not find on a map. That is precisely the charm. Structure is not the obstacle, either: the 2026-27 tie-in table carries slots for every conference these programs play in, from the MAC and Sun Belt up to the Big Ten. The bids exist. Somebody in the table above just has to go take one. When the 2026 board opens in Bowl Futures, the tie-ins by conference will tell you which doors are open to which chasers, and Bowl Bridge lets you replay the droughts game by game, all the way back to the last time each of these schools heard its name called.
