The Longest Conference Road Trips in College Football for 2026

Northern Illinois to Hawaii is a 4,188-mile conference trip. We computed the longest stadium-to-stadium distance inside every 2026 conference from the membership and stadium data.

Conference realignment redrew the map, and the map has distances in it. Using the 2026 conference membership file that powers Realignment Cartographer, and the coordinates in our stadium database, we computed the longest possible road trip inside every league: the two stadiums in the same conference that sit farthest apart, measured straight-line, stadium to stadium. One honest caveat on coverage. The membership file lists 138 FBS schools for 2026, and our verified stadium database has coordinates for 136 of them. UAB and Western Kentucky are the two not staged, and neither sits anywhere near a geographic extreme of its league, so the headline numbers below are safe. Still, the ranking is a ranking of the 136 we can measure.

The overall champion is not close

The longest conference road trip in America belongs to the Mountain West, and it is Northern Illinois at Hawaii: 4,188.4 miles from DeKalb, Illinois to Honolulu. The league added NIU for 2026 and already had Hawaii at the far end of the Pacific, and the combination laps the field. The next two longest trips in the country are also Mountain West trips to Hawaii: North Dakota State at 3,799.9 miles and Air Force at 3,340.8. In fact, the Hawaii effect is so strong that the league does not need it for a big number. Take Hawaii out entirely and the Mountain West's longest trip is still NIU to San Jose State at 1,778.2 miles, which would rank sixth nationally on its own.

The ACC's number is the realignment era in one row. Boston College to Stanford is 2,684.2 miles, Boston College to California is 2,676.7, and California to Miami is 2,573.4. Before the western additions, the ACC's longest internal trip was Boston College to Miami at 1,243.0 miles. The league more than doubled its own maximum by adding three schools.

The Big Ten tells the same story with a different cast. Oregon to Rutgers, 2,460.3 miles, is the league's longest, and Rutgers is the eastern endpoint for the next two as well: USC at 2,425.8 and UCLA at 2,415.5. Strip out the four western additions and the old Big Ten's longest trip was Nebraska to Rutgers at 1,162.6 miles. The MAC, of all leagues, now owns the third-longest trip in the sport: Sacramento State, a 2026 arrival, to UMass in Hadley, Massachusetts is 2,547.8 miles, and Sacramento State to Buffalo is 2,228.1. A league that used to fit inside a day's drive now has a California campus.

The runners-up show how deep the sprawl goes. In the Big 12, UCF owns the whole podium: Utah at 1,920.1, BYU at 1,900.9, and Arizona State at 1,843.5. New Mexico State is CUSA's western anchor three times over, paired with Delaware at 1,796.4, FIU at 1,650.7, and Liberty at 1,596.4. The American's second-longest trip is UTSA to Temple at 1,503.4. And the rebuilt Pac-12, an eight-team league, still manages a second pair over 1,500 miles: Texas State to Washington State at 1,554.0.

Even the compact leagues are not compact

The two tightest leagues on the list still clear a thousand miles. The Sun Belt, the most regional power in the Group of 6, tops out at Louisiana to Old Dominion, 1,014.9 miles. The SEC, which fans think of as the compact old guard, has Texas to South Carolina at 1,009.3, and its second-longest trip, Oklahoma to Florida at 959.0, would have been a headline number in a normal era and is now a footnote. Every one of the ten FBS conferences now contains a possible trip of more than a thousand miles. There is no such thing as a regional league anymore. There are only leagues whose longest haul is 1,000 miles and leagues whose longest haul is 4,188.

A final note on what these numbers are not. They are straight lines between stadiums, not flight routes, bus rides, or what a team actually spends in the air, and most of these pairs will not meet in a given season. They are the outer edges of each conference's footprint, the maximum distance the map now asks a league to span. The map stopped making sense a few realignments ago. At least now it has measurements.
